Electrical Diagnostics

We Find the Real Problem, Not Just the One You Can See.

A dead outlet might be a tripped GFCI, a loose connection, a failed device, or a wiring fault. A breaker that trips repeatedly might be an overloaded circuit, a failing breaker, or a downstream wiring issue. MAG Electric traces problems to their actual source rather than resetting the closest GFCI and hoping it holds. You get a written diagnosis and a fixed-price quote before any work begins.

  • Dead outlet and switch diagnosis and repair
  • Tripping breaker investigation and resolution
  • Flickering light diagnosis and correction
  • Partial power loss and circuit fault tracing
  • Code violation identification and correction
  • GFCI and AFCI installation and replacement

Pre-Sale Inspections

Electrical Issues Found at Closing Cost More Than Fixing Them First.

Home inspectors flag electrical problems on nearly every pre-1980 property in SLO and Santa Barbara Counties. Common findings: Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels, double-tapped breakers, missing GFCI protection, aluminum wiring connections, and unpermitted subpanel work. Addressing these before listing removes buyer leverage and keeps your transaction on schedule.

  • Pre-listing electrical inspection and written report
  • Federal Pacific and Zinsco panel replacement
  • Double-tap corrections and circuit separation
  • GFCI installation for kitchens, baths, and exterior
  • Unpermitted work correction and permit pull
  • Written report for seller disclosure package

Repair and Troubleshooting Questions

For repair and troubleshooting calls, we assess the problem during the site visit and provide a written fixed-price quote to resolve it. We do not charge separately for diagnosis in most cases. If a repair turns out to be more complex than initially apparent, we communicate that before proceeding and update the quote.
The three most common causes are an overloaded circuit (too many devices drawing power simultaneously), a failing breaker that trips below its rated amperage, or a wiring fault downstream in the circuit. We determine which is the case during the diagnostic visit and provide a fixed-price resolution.
GFCI outlets detect small current imbalances that indicate a ground fault. Frequent tripping can indicate a failing GFCI device, moisture in an outlet box, a wiring problem in the circuit, or an appliance drawing current in a way that triggers the sensor. We diagnose which and resolve it.
